Designing Safer Chatbots: Policy Pathways to Protect Young People in Conversational AI Ecosystems

This project investigates how to ensure the safety and wellbeing of young people engaging with AI chatbots. It asks: How are young users using chatbots? What risks do these interactions pose? What policy and regulatory safeguards are needed to mitigate harm to young users? -
Fostering Public Trust in AI
In partnership with the Centre for Media, Technology, and Democracy, MILA, and the Dialogue on Technology Project

This project will empowers Canadian citizens to better understand AI technologies by democratizing the AI conversation and strengthening the legitimacy of AI roll out in the country. In doing so, it offers a scalable model for inclusive public engagement on AI investment and adoption in Canada. -
National Youth Forums on AI
In partnership with the Centre for Media, Technology, and Democracy

September 2025 - April 2026
This project convenes young Canadians, aged 17–23, for two days of dialogue, expert testimonies, and collaborative discussion about AI, culminating in a national report on Youth Public Trust in AI. Forum topics include AI chatbots, information integrity, privacy, and age assurance. -
Mapping Online Hostility in North America
In partnership with the Media Ecosystem Observatory and Paradigms

This project uses digital trace methods to identify and track and explore the origins of hostile narratives online, and pairs this data with national surveys to understand the impacts of online hostility on the beliefs and values of Canadian citizens. -

Trust in Remote Voting: Nova Scotia

This book project develops a novel framework to understand the trustworthiness of and public trust in remote voting systems in Nova Scotia. This includes measuring the extent to which electors trust remote methods, and identifying the role that relevant political actors play in shaping electors’ perceptions of trust. -

This book project assesses the extent to which digital technologies and data are changing governance regimes, the economy, opportunities for participation, and democratic institutions in Canada. It examines the potential consequences of regulating elections technologies, AI, and the Internet of Things.
